second Randolph (CVA-15), former CV-15 reclassified CVS-15 on 31 March 1959, and conducted ASW operations off the east coast throughout that year and the next, receiving her fourth Battle Efficiency "E" in a row in September 1960. After overhaul at Norfolk Randolph sailed for operations in the Caribbean and served as the recovery ship for Astronaut Virgil Grissom on America's second manned space flight, a suborbital shot. In February 1962, Randolph was the primary recovery ship for Astronaut John Glenn on his flight, the first American orbital voyage in space. After his historic three-orbit flight, he landed safely near the destroyer USS Noa (DD-841) from which he was transferred, by helicopter, to Randolph. In the summer of 1962, Randolph again steamed to the Mediterranean. Returning to the western Atlantic as the Cuban missile crisis broke; she operated in the Caribbean from the end of October through November.

fifth Independence (CVA-62) commenced Post Deployment tune-up. Later that month, the wife of astronaut Alen Sheppard visited the Indy. A serious fire broke out in USS Independence (CVA-62) #4 Main Machinery Room on 19 August 1961. There were no fatalities, but four Indy crew members were seriously injured.

Shangri-la (CVA-38), former CV-38 sailed east for her first tour of duty with the 6th Fleet on 2 February 1961. On 1 June 1961, Shangri-La, along with USS Intrepid (CV-11) and USS Randolph (CV-15), was ordered to stand by off southern Hispaniola when a general uprising seemed about to follow the assassination of President Trujillo of the Dominican Republic. She returned to the United States that fall and entered the New York Naval Shipyard. Back in Mayport by the beginning of 1962, Shangri-La stood out again for the Mediterranean on 7 February 1962.

ninth Wasp (CVS-18), former CVA-18, CV-18 & Oriskany - On 9 January 1961, Wasp sailed for the Virginia capes operating area and devoted the first half of 1961 to exercises there, at Narragansett Bay, R.I., and at Nova Scotia. On 9 June, Wasp got underway from Norfolk, Va., for a three-month Mediterranean cruise. The ship conducted exercises at Augusta Bay, Sicily, Barcelona, Spain; San Remo and La Spezia, Italy, Aranci Bay, Sardinia; Genoa, Italy, and Cannes, France, and returned to Boston on 1 September 1961. The carrier entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for an interim overhaul and resumed operations on 6 November 1961.

second Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) - On 21 December 1961, the Navy and New York Shipbuilding Corp. reached a final contract price for Kitty Hawk of approximately $178 million. This figure reflected the “final settlement of all claims and counterclaims pertaining to Kitty Hawk,” including allegations of cost overruns, delays, and purportedly inferior workmanship performed by that company.

third Constellation (CVA-64) first shipyard DSRA period followed upon arrival from her second “WestPac” deployment on 1 February 1965; delivered to the Navy on 1 October 1961. Conducted her first shipyard Drydocking Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) period followed upon arrival from her second “Westpac” deployment on 1 February 1965, lasting eight months from 1 February to November 1965 at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash.; delivered to the Navy on 1 October 1961, commencing workups in November 1965 for her first full-blown war cruise upon conclusion of overhaul.

“During an American Nimitz Class carrier's 50 year life span, it has 4 Drydocking Planned Incremental Availabilities and 12 planned incremental availabilities. It has only one RCOH, however, which is the most significant overhaul the ship receives during its 50-year life span. See DID's November 2005 coverage and detailing re: the CVN-70 USS Carl Vinson's RCOH, which is expected to cost a total of $2.89 billion; about $1.94 billion went to Northrop Grumman for planning and execution” (Ref. 674).

U. S. Aircraft Carriers participating in Planned Maintenance Availability (PMA); Post-Shakedown Availability (PSA); Post Selective Restricted Availability (PSRA); Continuous Incremental Availability (CIA); Planned Incremental Availability (PIA) and Docked-Planned Incremental Availability (DPIA)

(1978 to 2019).
