The fire spread to several spaces via a cableway and caused extreme heat in some of the ship spaces, but it was contained and extinguished by the crew without any serious injuries to personnel. It took several hours to completely contain and extinguish the fire. The ship had been conducting a routine replenishment at sea in the Pacific Ocean with USS Crommelin (FFG-37) when smoke was observed and an emergency breakaway was initiated. There were no serious injuries. Twenty-three Sailors were treated for heat stress and one Sailor was treated for first degree burns. Beginning in Fiscal Year 2015, the Optimized Fleet Response Plan will align carrier strike groups to a 36-month training and deployment cycle. All required maintenance, training, evaluations, plus a single eight-month overseas deployment, are scheduled throughout this 36-month cycle in order to reduce costs while increasing overall fleet readiness. This new plan streamlined the inspection and evaluation process while maintaining a surge capacity for emergency deployments. The ultimate objective is to reduce time at sea while increasing in-port time from 49% to 68%. While initially to be used by U.S. Navy carrier strike groups, the Optimized Fleet Response Plan will be adopted for all fleet operations.

Accordingly, the carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) will be the first carrier to deploy under this new O-FRP cycle, replacing the previously-scheduled Eisenhower in the deployment lineup. Additionally, the Carrier Strike Group Eight command staff will deploy with the Truman while the Eisenhower will serve as the new flagship for Carrier Strike Group Ten.

Note:  Carriers in overhaul a year or longer, with the exception of those carriers overhaul that commences the previous year into the next or completed the same year, are not included, as active carriers for the year, and in many cases remain inactive as years follow dependant upon the length of overhaul. Carriers that were reactivated in December are not considered active for any particular year. Carrier’s overhauls that commence or decommissioned in January are not considered active for any particular year.

Actual Carrier strength (Active) reported does not reflect Carriers commencing and completing overhaul during any particular year and Carriers that were decommissioned during any particular year are not counted as a commissioned carrier the following year. Carriers that underwent year or longer overhauls sometimes decommissioned, remaining inactive for several years under going extensive modification, remaining part of the active carrier force, and therefore are included as commissioned carriers, merely inactive due to overhaul.

On 1 October 1952 CVs & CVBs reclassified CVA

Several CVA’s reclassified CVS and decommissioned CV’s reclassified CVS and or AVT commencing in 1952.  CVAs also reclassified LPH commencing in 1959

Carrier assigned to the Naval Air Reserve training program is included in the total count

Kitty Hawk (CV/CVA-63) (Moved into dry dock at Hunter’s Point San Francisco, Calif., and work began to convert the ship from an attack (CVA) to a multi-mission carrier CV 14/01/73 to July 1973). John F. Kennedy (CV/CVA-67) reclassified from an attack (CVA) to a multi-mission carrier CV 01/12/74.

Remaining CVAs and Three CVNs, one prior to commission reclassified 30/06/75

Aircraft Carriers from 1946 to 2016 reflect total number of commissioned aircraft carriers by year, while the total number of active carriers for any given year reflect those carriers not under going major overhaul lasting 8-months or longer. Heading dates on annual commissioned aircraft carrier reports reference the oldest commissioned aircraft carrier to the present year.
